What is hearing protection fit testing?
Fit testing measures how effectively earplugs protect an individual against harmful noise. It confirms the chosen product fits correctly and delivers the expected level of noise reduction, supporting a safer working environment and regulatory compliance. Using the uvex xact-fit system, the test measures the actual attenuation achieved by the wearer in a controlled setting.
Verifying proper fit
Fit testing confirms whether the hearing protection device is correctly fitted to the individual, ensuring it provides the intended level of protection.
Educating users
Workers are trained on how to properly insert and wear their hearing protection, reducing the risk of misuse and improving overall effectiveness.
Documenting compliance
Fit testing provides clear evidence that employees are receiving adequate protection, helping employers meet their legal obligations under the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005.
Personalising protection
Since ear canal shapes and sizes vary, fit testing helps identify the most suitable type and size of hearing protection for each worker, improving comfort and WEARABILITY.
Why is fit testing necessary?
In the UK, hearing protection is commonly rated using the Single Number Rating (SNR). However, SNR is based on test averages and does not reflect real-world use. In practice, protection can be significantly reduced by:
✘ Incorrect insertion
✘ Poor fit
✘ Insufficient user training
As a result, wearers may receive little or no effective protection, even with certified products. Fit testing is the only reliable way to measure the protection an individual actually achieves. It plays a key role in ensuring regulatory compliance and protecting employee hearing.
